IDSSA & LASA Abroad Present: Voices and Perspectives of Volunteerism Panel Discussion

Wednesday, April 3rd, MW140, 5pm-7pm

Many of us have had some sort of exposure to themes of volunteerism, whether it be by personal experience, another's testimonies or pictures, or in reading an article. These windows reveal vast perspectives on a highly contested topic, perspectives we would like to bridge together through an open and engaging panel discussion on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 that will cover issues of legitimacy, impact and sustainability.

Following the panel discussion will be a presentation by LASA Abroad's team members, who have just returned from a volunteer trip to the Dominican Republic.

We hope that you are able to partake in an intriguing conversation with light refreshments on behalf the International Development Studies Students' Association (IDSSA) and the Latin American Students' Association Overseas Volunteer Initiative, LASA Abroad, and strongly encourage you to come with an open mind, as well as personal encounters and opinions of your own to share with us.

January Events

Speaker Series: Episode 3 - Margaret Hancock

Monday, January 14th, SL283 (Alumni Lounge), 5pm

Cost: FREE!

In the International Development community, we spend lots of time discussing issues related to global inequalities. At this event, we will focus on local development issues that affect marginalized populations in Toronto, and what a grassroots NGO is doing about it.

Join us in a conversation with Margaret Hancock, Executive Director of Family Services Toronto (FST). FST is an organization that assists families and individuals through counselling, community development, advocacy, and public education programs. Starting almost 100 years ago as the Neighbourhood Workers Association, FST now offers services and programs to immigrants, refugees, women affected by domestic violence, and the LGBT community.

At this event we hope to create a dialogue that will address the following questions:
• How can a local development organization adapt to a changing, diversifying urban population so that it can serve the needs of marginalized groups?
• How can an organization face the challenges associated with cultural clashes when addressing issues like domestic violence?
• How can an organization advocate for macro-level policy change?

Come join us on Monday January 14th at 5pm and invite anyone you think will be interested!

IDS Forum and Potluck

September 28th, 5pm-8pm

The IDS Forum is coming up on September 28th from 5pm-6pm in MW 130. The forum is an opportunity to voice comments, questions and concerns about anything IDS-related. This year for whoever attends there will be a class photo taken. The annual IDS Potluck will be happening right after the forum in MW 130 from about 6pm-8pm. The potluck is a great place to meet other IDS students and professors. There is also a short presentation by the IDS co-op 5th years who have just returned from placement. This year the format will be a bit different because people will have to sign a form stating what they will be bringing - this is due to strict University policy.
